Tim Waterfield
An enthusiastic professional Web Developer & IT specialist with over 25 years of experience delivering large-scale IT projects, managing servers, databases, and technical teams.
With over 25 years of experience in the IT industry, I have managed, maintained, and delivered complex, large-scale web applications and database systems. Over this time, I have worked across diverse professional environments, collaborating with stakeholders, developers, and users globally. In recent years, my career has focused on architecting and managing web platforms for leading scientific institutions, notably the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Currently, as a Web Developer at UKCEH, I am responsible for enhancing, maintaining, and building the organisation's core Drupal sites, managing major Drupal migrations, and leading initiatives on modern static site frameworks like Gatsby and NextJS to optimise hosting costs and security. In addition to hands-on development, I chair the Web Technical Group, oversee domain migrations from UKRI, and work closely with Information Security to establish vulnerability scanning and high technical standards across all digital assets.
Prior to my current role, I served as the IT Officer for the IPCC Working Group I Technical Support Unit in Paris. There, I directed the technical operations supporting the creation of the WGI IPCC assessment reports and the formal process for the AR6 WGI and SR1.5 reports. This included developing custom Drupal databases to manage complex scientific datasets. A key highlight of my tenure was co-architecting the web publishing framework and microsites for the landmark Working Group I Sixth Assessment Report (WGI AR6) and the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, along with establishing robust international communication channels and organising IT logistics for large-scale approval sessions around the world.
My foundational career spans a wide range of roles including Application Developer at The Fair Trade Practice (building WPF/XAML applications and Raspberry Pi wallboards), Web Manager at NERC's National Oceanography Centre (leveraging CiviCRM and Drupal), and Lead Developer for Internova's subscription-based e-commerce platform. Across all these roles, my passion has remained the same: combining clean code, modern web technologies, and stable infrastructure to create impactful digital products.
In addition to my professional work, I develop and maintain a variety of web applications and music projects. You can explore these on my dedicated Portfolio page.
